Frequently Asked Questions

Who is FBO?

Foundations for a Better Oregon was formed in 2004 by five of Oregon’s leading foundations: The Collins Foundation, The Ford Family Foundation, JELD-WEN Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust and The Oregon Community Foundation. In January 2008, The James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation joined the FBO consortium.

Why did these foundations form FBO?

Each of FBO’s member foundations contributes generously to improving the fabric of life throughout Oregon. But on some issues, collective action can be more effective than individual efforts. FBO was created to engage Oregon’s philanthropic community in some of the most difficult challenges facing our state, with the idea that more can be accomplished by working together toward a common goal.

What is FBO’s governing structure?

FBO is governed by a 12-member board of directors – two representatives of each member foundation. Board officers are elected annually.

What is FBO working on?

Since forming in 2004, FBO’s efforts have been devoted solely to improving Oregon’s K-12 public education system through an organization it created called the Chalkboard Project. In the future, FBO plans to take on other issues of importance to Oregon and Oregonians.

How does FBO pick the issues it wants to work on?

FBO was formed because each of the member foundations saw tackling Oregon’s K-12 public education challenges as a high priority, and wanted to work collaboratively to promote change. When FBO is ready to tackle another pressing issue, it will solicit recommendations on key topics it should address. The FBO board will make the final decision.
